Arthur’s Pass National Park is located between the West Coast and Canterbury/Christchurch in the middle (ish) of the South Island. The pass connected both regions, and the view of Arthur’s Pass from the Otira Valley Viaduct Lookout is one of the most iconic sights on any South Island itinerary.
The lookout is very easy to see as you drive through Arthurs Pass. The pull-off is on the left-hand side as you drive towards Christchurch or the right if you’re heading towards the West Coast. The views will look dramatically different depending on the time of year you visit and the weather that day. On a good day, you’ll be able to see mountains, lush native bush, and a river winding into the distance.
You can expect to spend around 10 minutes here soaking up the view. While you’re here, keep an eye out for Kea - New Zealand’s Alpine Parrot. They’re cute, but incredibly destructive and will destroy anything they can get their beaks on!
