Ohakune is a little mountain town located at the base of Mount Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park.

There are lots of accommodation options (including Airbnbs that look like they belong on Grand Designs), shops and a supermarket, as well as some cafes and restaurants. It's a good idea to base yourself here if you're planning to ski on the Turoa side of the mountain, or mountain bike along Ohakune Old Coach Road!

If you're hiking the Tongarro Corsing, I'd personally stay in the National Park, which is much closer to the hike and shuttles.
