Kōtukuwhakaoka (Lake Brunner) is the largest lake on the West Coast of New Zealand. It’s only 31km from Greymouth, which sounds like a lot, but The Great Coast Road is so beautiful you’ll pass by in a flash!
Lake Brunner is best known as a world-class fishing destination and one of New Zealand’s best fisheries. The lake is surrounded by native bush and views of the mountains, and it feels like a world away from the hustle and bustle of real life. It’s also much less popular than other West Coast lakes like Lake Matheson (near Fox Glacier - highly recommend!!!), so you’re less likely to encounter hordes of people, especially first thing in the morning. If you visit, there are lots of walking trails around the area, including the Lake Brunner Walk, which follows the shoreline.
The closest town to the lake is Moana. If you want to stay in the area, the Lake Brunner Moto Camp is dog-friendly and offers lots of different accommodation options.
