Cape Egmont Lighthouse sits next to the wild, rugged coastline of Taranaki and was one of my favourite stops when we drove along Surf Highway 45.

It’s tucked away on the westernmost point of the region, and while Cape Egmont Lighthouse is not a huge tourist attraction, it’s absolutely worth the detour! You can’t go inside, but the views are stunning, and if you visit on a clear day, you’ll see Taranaki Maunga rising up behind it.

How to get there

From the main road, turn off onto Cape Road and follow it for about 5km until you reach the end. There’s a small amount of parking at the end of the road, and it's a short walk to the lighthouse itself. I’ve never been here for sunset, but I would love to come back and bring our dinner here one day.
