New Chums Beach is easily one of the most popular beaches on the North Island. It's located in Whangapoua, near the top of the Coromandel, and has a perfect curve of golden sand, bright blue water, native bush, and phenomenal views.

What makes New Chums so special is that you can only reach it on foot. Park your car at the New Chums Beach/Whangapoua Beach car park and follow the walking track from the northern end of Whangapoua Beach.

It's a short 1km trail through native bush and should take you around 20-30 minutes each way. Once you arrive, set up underneath one of the pōhutukawa trees and then walk up to the New Chums viewpoint. This is one of the most photographed spots on the North Island and extra beautiful on a sunny day.

Things to know before visiting New Chums Beach

  • Best visited at low tide. You'll need to cross a short stream on Whangapoua Beach before reaching the track, so I recommend checking the tide times before you set off.

  • It's very popular and can get super busy in the summer. Try to arrive at Whangapoua Beach by 10 am for the best chance of getting a parking space!

  • There are no facilities here, so make sure you use the toilets at the Whangapoua Beach car park and bring water, lunch, sunscreen, and anything else you need for the day :)
