The Mt John Summit Circuit Track in Tekapo is a moderate hike with stunning 360° views of Lake Tekapo's sparkling blue water and the surrounding mountains. There are some steep sections, but the track is well-maintained, and there are plenty of opportunities to stop and take in your surroundings.
If you can bear the early alarm, I recommend doing the walk at sunrise. Sunrises at Lake Tekapo are spectacular, and the views of Lake Tekapo and Mackenzie Basin from the top of Mt. John are exceptional.
Track overview
Difficulty: Moderate
Length: 3km return
Time: 1.5-2 hours
This track starts at Tekapo Springs, right next to Lakes Edge Holiday Park. So, if you’re staying there, you can literally roll out of bed and start the hike!
Follow the signs for Mt John Summit Circuit Track through a forest and climb upwards. It’s a steady climb but reasonably steep, so I would recommend wearing decent shoes!
After around 45 minutes, you'll pop out of the forest and continue walking upwards. Once you're up at the top, turn right and follow the track to the South Summit, and then circle back and reward yourself with a barista-made coffee at Astro Café. It’s easily one of the most scenic cafés in New Zealand; you’ll deserve it after that climb!
