Furneaux Lodge is nestled at the head of Endeavour Inlet in the beautiful Marlborough Sounds. It’s Marlborough family-owned and operated, and accessible by boat from Picton or via the walking trails in the area. I stayed here for one night when my family and I hiked the multi-day Queen Charlotte Track (I’d recommend it if you’ve got 5 days to spare!)
The lodge is backs onto native forest on one side and sparkling blue-green water on the other. If you plan to stay here overnight, they have lots of accommodation options from romantic suites and family-friendly cottages (all with sea views) to budget-friendly hiker’s cabins. I’d note that “budget friendly” is a loose term as Marlborough Sounds is reasonably expensive. For reference, the budget option at Furneaux Lodge is still $195 NZD per night for a double cabin or $90 per night for a single bed in a dorm-style room.
If you’re short on time but still want to experience the beauty of the area, I’d recommend hiking the Ship Cove to Ferneaux Lodge track. This is a 17km/5 hour walk along one of the most beautiful sections of the trail. To get here, you’ll hop on a cruise from Picton to Ship Cove. You might even get a chance to see dolphins on your way over. Then, you’ll walk to the lodge, crossing over Tawa Saddle, passing beautiful lookouts before dropping into Resolution Bay. Drinks and meals are available to purchase at the end of the trail, which was a lovely surprise.
If you plan on staying here, make sure you book your accommodation well in advance as it’s super popular!
