Mount Aspiring National Park is home to some of New Zealand's most beautiful natural wonders, and Fantail Falls is no exception!

I first visited on a road trip through the South Island while travelling from Wanaka to Franz Josef. After being cooped up in the car for an hour, I decided to stretch my legs, and wow, I am pleased I did!

How to get there

Getting to Fantail Falls is super easy. It’s just an hour from Wānaka along SH6, and there is free parking at the start of the trail. From there, it’s a short 5–10 minute bush walk that’s good for all abilities (mostly flat!)

Then, you step out onto the edge of the Haast River and get views of the 23m waterfall. This is one of those 'side-of-the-road' gems that make a road trip extra special!
