One of the best (and most inexpensive!) things to do in Wānaka is to get a takeaway ( I recommend one from Big Fig) and eat it down by the lakefront. It's the ultimate people-watching place, as there's always someone boating, jet skiing, swimming, or doing something else that makes you stare for juuuuust too long. I could sit there forever.
