If you're on the hunt for the easiest walk on the West Coast, congratulations, you've found it. The Fox Glacier Viewpoint, also known as Te Kopikopiko o te Waka, is more of a stroll than a walk, with next-level views of the Southern Alps and Fox Glacier.
When I say easy, I don't mean "walk along a flat track for an hour" easy. I mean, you'll just have to take a few steps to a beautiful view of Fox Glacier/Te Moeka o Tuawe.
The site is also a cultural heritage landmark, telling the Ngāi Tahu creation story of the capsized waka (canoe) that symbolises the Southern Alps and the South Island. Along the walkway, you’ll find information panels, a waka, and a picnic spot if you want to stop and have lunch.
How to get there
From Fox Glacier town, drive about 5 minutes west along Cook Flat Road, then turn onto Moraine Walk Road. You’ll see signs for Te Kopikopiko o te Waka and a car park at the end of the road.
