Maungawhau or Mount Eden is the highest volcano in Auckland and one of the most popular places to come and watch the sunset. From the top of the 196m peak, you’ll get incredible views of Rangitoto Island, Waitematā Harbour and the skyline. The tihi (summit) and crater are sacred to Māori, so please don’t walk down into it. If you’d like to explore, there are paths and boardwalks around the edge and plenty of places to sit and have your morning coffee or picnic dinner.

How to get there

Mount Eden is a 10-minute drive from Auckland CBD or around 20 minutes by bus. You’ll need to park nearby and walk up (about 15–20 minutes). The main gates are open 7 am–8:30 pm in summer and 7 am–7 pm in winter (these aren't guidelines, but enforced times - we once found that out the hard way!) There are two visitor car parks and a toilet block located on the corner of Mt Eden Road and Summit Drive, near the playground and below the kiosk.
