Queenstown is located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, near the bottom of the South Island. It's so beautiful and one of the most popular places in New Zealand, welcoming close to 1.5 million visitors every year.
What is there to do in Queenstown?
I've visited five times over the years and can safely say there is no shortage of things to do here. Queenstown is home to the world’s first commercial bungee jump, canyon swings, jet boating, and skydiving. You can take scenic flights over the mountains to Milford Sound and Aoraki. You'll also find incredible restaurants, gorgeous places and lots of free walking trails if you're travelling on a budget.
How many days do you need in Queenstown?
This is such a tricky question! In my opinion, there's no right or wrong way to see Queenstown, it just depends on what kind of experience you're looking for and whether you're coming here on holiday or for a quick trip. Ultimately, a trip to Queenstown will leave you with unforgettable memories, no matter how long you stay.
If you're on holiday, a week will give you time to explore the town centre, tick off some bucket list activities and visit places like Arrowtown, Glenorchy, Cardrona and Wanaka. You'll also have time to travel to Milford Sound - the unofficial 8th Wonder of the World.
If you're here for a quick trip, three days should be enough to squeeze in the highlights. But, I'd recommend thinking about your budget and what you like doing when you're travelling.
If you love hiking, I'd recommend driving to Glenorchy where you'll find one of the trailheads for the famous Routeburn Track.
Why should you visit Queenstown?
Adrenaline: Bungy jumping, skydiving, and the world-famous Nevis Swing.
Breathtaking scenery: Explore hikes like Queenstown Hill and Ben Lomond, or cruise Lake Wakatipu with the TSS Earnslaw.
World-class food and wine: Visit iconic places like Fergburger, try local wineries, or dine with a view at Stratosfare Restaurant.
Gorgeous accommodation: Driftaway Queenstown in Frankton is the ultimate luxury campground, while Kamana Lakehouse is one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at.
It's a winter wonderland: Ski at Cardrona, Coronet Peak, or The Remarkables during the colder months. These world-class ski fields may not be as massive as those in Aspen or the French Alps, but they’re just as epic.
