Russell, known as Kororāreka in Māori, is the gateway to the Bay of Islands and New Zealand’s first capital city.
I’ve got such a soft spot for Russell. I spent lots of childhood summers camping in the Bay of Islands, and it still feels just as special every time I go back. There’s so much to do!! You could spend your time sailing, kayaking or dolphin watching or cruise over to Urupukapuka Island or catch the passenger ferry to Paihia and visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. If you'd rather stay put, I'd beeline for the cafes, go for a little walk down the waterfront, wander around the shops and have dinner at Hōne’s Garden.
Russell is one of Northland’s most popular holiday spots, especially in summer, and it can get really busy. I recommend booking your accommodation earlier than you think you need to, especially if you want to stay at Russell TOP 10 Holiday Park, local Airbnbs, or gorgeous hotels like the Duke of Marlborough.
