Piha Beach is a black-sand beach on the West Coast of Auckland and (probably) the most popular place to surf in New Zealand.

The views here are jaw-dropping, and it truly has something for everyone, from epic surf conditions and stunning hiking trails to cosy beachside cafes and the most beautiful sunsets.

Growing up in Auckland, I’ve been to Piha more times than I can count, and each visit reminds me why I love it so much. Piha is the epitome of Auckland’s West Coast, with its dramatic black sand, rugged coastline, and iconic Lion Rock.

When should I visit Piha?

The best way to experience Piha is on a late afternoon trip. On one of my favourite summer visits (ever!), we did the very popular Kitekite Falls trail around 4 pm, headed to the beach for a picnic at 5 pm to soak up golden hour and hung around to watch the sunset.

Summer is the most popular time to visit as the weather is warm and the days are long, making it perfect for swimming and exploring. And even if there are lots of people, the beach is so huge that it never feels too busy. In winter, Piha is quieter, and the sunsets are incredible.

Can I swim at Piha Beach?

You can swim here, but Piha’s known for strong surf and rips. It’s one of New Zealand’s more dangerous beaches, so be very careful. Make sure you always swim between the flags, stay within your comfort zone, and don’t go out too deep, especially if you’re not confident in the water.

How to get there

Piha’s remote vibe is part of its charm, but it means there's no public transport, and you’ll need a car to get there. If you’re road-tripping across New Zealand, plan to visit Piha on your last day in Auckland so you can explore before heading out. If you don't have a car, there are shuttles from Auckland (starting around $20) or guided tours (from $195) that’ll give you the full West Coast experience.

If you want to stay overnight

If you plan to spend more time at Piha or would like to escape the city for more than a day, there are a few places to stay there! Piha Campground is a budget-friendly option just a short walk from the beach. It’s basic but has everything you need, like hot showers and a communal kitchen. Plus, it's across from the Piha General Store, which sells barista-made Allpress coffee and hot pies.

Things to do in the area

If you’ve got time, don’t miss the nearby walking tracks. We most recently hiked the Comans Track and Mercer Bay Loop and loved it! One of my favourites is Kitekite Falls, an easy 45-minute return walk through native bush that ends at a stunning 40-meter waterfall.
