Underrated park at the edge of the Southern Alps

Often overshadowed by other places like Kahurangi (Abel Tasman) National Park or the West Coast, Nelson Lakes National Park is an underrated gem at the northern edge of the Southern Alps.

This stunning part of the South Island is a dream for outdoor lovers, especially if you love hiking and breathtaking views without the crowds of people!

The park is home to two beautiful (and famous!) lakes: Rotoroa and Rotoiti. According to Māori mythology, these lakes were created by the great chief Rakaihautu, who dug the basins with his kō (digging stick). The larger became Lake Rotoroa ("large waters"), and the smaller, Lake Rotoiti ("small waters").

Things to do

There are walking tracks suitable to all fitness levels, but one of the most popular hikes in the park is the Lake Angelus Loop Track, a three-day trek through the alpine ranges. If you’re short on time but up for a challenge, you can hike to Lake Angelus Hut and stay overnight. It’s a steep climb, but worth it if you love backcountry hiking!

Accommodation in Nelson Lakes

If you're travelling between Kahurangi and the West Coast, Nelson Lakes is well worth a stop. There are lots of accommodation options, from holiday homes and lodges to some of the most beautiful DOC huts and campsites in the country. You should stay in St Arnaud, the tiny gateway town to the national park, where you'll find a handful of motels, lodges, and two campsites. I highly recommend the Kerr Bay DOC campsite. Look at the photos, and you’ll see why! While there’s not much to do in town, it’s the perfect base for hiking and exploring the area.
