Matai Falls is a bit more low-key than other waterfalls in the Catlins, but it is definitely worth stopping at if you're looking for a short, easy walk or to get away from the crowds at other more popular waterfalls in the Catlins, like Purakaunui Falls.
When we arrived, I was surprised to find out that there are actually two waterfalls here; Matai Falls and Horseshoe Falls. From the carpark follow the signposts for Matai Falls Walk through the native podocarp and broadleaf forest. The track is an easy 10–15 minute walk (one way) and suitable for all abilities. After a few minutes, you'll reach a junction—turn left to head down to Matai Falls, a 10-metre plunging waterfall with a small wooden viewing platform. Then, if you're up for it, follow the right-hand track for a short ascent to Horseshoe Falls, a gently cascading upper waterfall.
How to get there
The Matai Falls carpark is in the Table Hill Scenic Reserve, just off the Papatowai Highway. From Dunedin, travel south on SH1, then continue along the scenic Chaslands Highway for 48 km. The carpark is about halfway between Papatowai and Owaka, and it’s well-signposted. There are picnic tables if you want to take a break, but there are no toilets here, so make sure you plan ahead.
