The Mangonui Fish Shop is one of Northland's best-known takeaways and restaurants. It has been trading on the same site for over 70 years and is very popular among tourists and locals. The building itself is historic and full of character, and there’s a deck out the back where you can sit and eat while watching boats cruise through Mangonui Harbour.

The story behind the “world famous” claim is pretty funny. Apparently, the previous owner noticed how many travellers were showing up at his fish shop because locals had recommended the place. Not one to turn down a good marketing opportunity, he added the words “World Famous” to the name, and the restaurant has grown in popularity since.

While they’re not internationally recognised, we stopped in over New Year’s for takeaway, and the fish and chips were really nice. They’re expensive, and the portions aren’t huge, but the food was fresh and tasty.
