This is one of the strangest beaches on the entire route and possibly in Europe.
Playa de Gulpiyuri is an inland beach. Not a lake. Not a river beach. An actual saltwater beach, complete with waves, located in a field about a hundred meters from the coast. The sea enters through a subterranean tunnel in the rock, fills a small sandy cove surrounded by grass and cliffs, and produces waves that arrive from underground. The result is a beach with no visible connection to the ocean that somehow behaves exactly like one.
At high tide it almost disappears. At low tide it is fully exposed and roughly the size of a large living room. It is not a place to swim — the currents through the tunnel are unpredictable. It is a place to stand and recalibrate your understanding of how coastlines work.
The walk from the parking area is about ten minutes across farmland. There are no facilities. The site is protected and access is managed — check current conditions before visiting as it can close during extreme weather or high season crowding.
