Who says rainy days have to suck? Here's a wet weather plan that's surprisingly even MORE beautiful and fascinating even when it's pouring!

This is the Aarge Gorge, located in Meiringen, Switzerland. It is formed over thousands of years by the Aare Glacier eroding its way and forming a path through the rock formation and limestone cliffs. Walking on the sturdy wooden platforms, you can marvel at the loud roaring glacier waters and limestone formations up close. This 1,400 meteres long and 200 metres gorge is a beautiful, inexpensive attraction and definitely is a attraction for nature-lovers.

How to get to Aareschlucht:

Take a train to Meiringen, then change to the regional train either to Aareschlucht West or Aareschlucht Ost. It doesnt matter which entrance you start from. However, note that the Aareschlucht Ost entrance is closer to the east gorge entrance (250m) whereas the Aareschlucht West entrance is a slighty further 500m away.

Prices: 10CHF for adults, 6CHF for kids, free for childnre under 6. There is a 20% discount if you are staying ovenight in the Meiringen region.

Note: Only the west entrance and western half of the gorge is stroller-friendly.

Opening:

• Beginning May – Mid June: 8:30 am to 5:30 pm

• Mid June – Mid September: 8:30 am to 6:30 pm

• Mid September – Beginning October: 8:30 am to 5:30 pm

Seasons:

• Aare Gorge west entrance: April – November

• Aare Gorge east entrance: May – November

• When both entrances are open, visitors can pass through the entire length of the gorge.
