Château de Gruyères
At the end of Gruyères’ cobblestone main street sits Château de Gruyères, a medieval castle that looks straight out of a storybook. Built in the 13th century, it’s packed with towers, courtyards, and panoramic views that make it fun for kids and parents alike.
What to see: Explore the knight’s hall, old kitchens, and ornate rooms filled with tapestries and stained glass. The towers give you sweeping views of the Fribourg Pre-Alps and the village below.
With kids: It’s hands-on enough to keep them interested—lots of stairs, winding passages, and places to imagine dragons or knights. The grounds outside are also great for a snack break.
Practical info:
Location: At the very top of Gruyères village (a short walk uphill from the entrance).
Hours: Open daily except for major holidays.
Cost: About CHF 12 adults / CHF 4 children (6–15). Free with the Swiss Travel Pass.
Nearby: After your castle visit, wander back down through the car-free village for fondue, raclette, or a stop at the cheese factory.
👉 Château de Gruyères is a perfect mix of history, imagination, and mountain views—and a great way to start a family day in Gruyères before heading to cheese and chocolate.
