The Brienz Rothorn Bahn is a vintage steam cogwheel train that’s been climbing from Brienz village up to the Rothorn Kulm viewpoint since 1892. Riding this bright-red train feels like stepping back in time—steam, whistles, and all—while the views get better with every turn.

  • The ride: About 1 hour each way to reach the summit at 2,351 m. The train carries around 100 passengers and runs hourly.

  • At the top: You’ll find sweeping 360° views of Lake Brienz, the Bernese Alps, and even over to central Switzerland. Plan at least an hour at the summit, or longer if you want to eat at the restaurant or hike down toward the Eisee lake.

  • Season: Early June–late October (sometimes only to the Planalp mid-station in May).

  • Tickets:

  • Reservations: Highly recommended—trains often sell out on weekends and holidays. You’ll need to book both your ascent and descent time slots.

  • Getting there: The station is right in Brienz village. Parking is available nearby, but some village lots are only 2 hours—so check signs carefully.

👉 For families, the Rothorn Bahn is less about rushing to a viewpoint and more about the journey—steam, whistles, mountains, and memories.
