Stoos Ridge Hike (Stoos Gratwanderung)
One of the most iconic and popular trails in Switzerland lately, this is the Stoos ridge trail near Lucerne.
Trail details: Moderate • 4.4 km • about 2 hours one way • 290 m up, 300 m down.
Season: Mid-June to October (check lift schedules before you go).
What the hike is like
Getting there is half the fun. First, you ride the steepest funicular in Europe (the kids will love it—it feels more like a space pod than a train). Then you hop on a chairlift up to Klingenstock, where the trail begins.
From there, the ridge walk rolls up and down along cliffs with panoramic views on both sides, before ending at Fronalpstock. There’s a restaurant waiting for you at the finish, and you can ride the chairlift back down to Stoos village. You can hike in either direction, and if you want to skip the lifts at the start or end, that’s an option too.
It’s a well-built trail, but it does have steep drop-offs without railings in some sections. We only recommend it for confident, experienced hikers with good shoes and steady footing.
Easier option
If you want the views without committing to the ridge, you can ride straight up to Fronalpstock and do the short panorama loop along the cliffs—still epic, and much easier for families with younger kids.
Tickets
You’ll want the “Peak Experience” ticket, which covers the funicular + chairlifts.
Free with the Lucerne Tell Pass.
Discounted with Swiss Travel Pass , Swiss Half Fare Card, and GA.
Cheaper if you book online (and you skip the line). No need to reserve in advance—tickets don’t sell out.
👉 Between the funicular ride, the ridge walk, and the views from Fronalpstock, the Stoos ridge hike is one of those “must-do once in your life” trails in Switzerland.
