Lauterbrunnen
Lauterbrunnen looks like it was lifted straight out of a fairytale. The village sits in a narrow valley with 72 waterfalls stumbling down the cliffs on either side, green pastures dotted with cows, and wooden chalets tucked along the river. It’s quieter than Grindelwald but just as jaw-dropping—some even call it the most beautiful valley in Switzerland.
The vibe: Peaceful, picture-perfect, and surrounded by nature. Instead of adrenaline activities, Lauterbrunnen is about soaking up the scenery, wandering through meadows, and hopping on cable cars to reach the car-free villages above like Murren.
Things to do with kids: Walk right from the village to Staubbach Falls, explore the underground tunnels at Trümmelbach Falls, or let little legs wander the flat valley trail while trains and paragliders glide overhead.
Where the cable cars can take you:
Grütschalp (Lauterbrunnen → Grütschalp → Mürren): Ride up the cliff and connect to the mountain train that takes you across to Mürren, a car-free village with incredible views.
Wengen (train from Lauterbrunnen): Another car-free village, perfect for family hikes and a slower mountain vibe. From here, you can keep going to Kleine Scheidegg for views of the Eiger.
Stechelberg (bus or valley walk from Lauterbrunnen): From the far end of the valley, multiple cable cars take you up to Gimmelwald, Mürren, and eventually to Schilthorn (famous for its 360° revolving restaurant and James Bond filming location).
Why go: Lauterbrunnen is all about atmosphere—towering cliffs, endless waterfalls, and easy connections to some of Switzerland’s most iconic alpine villages. It’s a great pick if you want a slower pace and stunning scenery right outside your hotel window.
👉 If your family loves waterfalls, quiet evenings, and exploring car-free villages, Lauterbrunnen is pure magic.
