Gelmersee Lake
Gelmersee might just be one of the dreamiest alpine lakes in Switzerland—the water is such a crazy shade of turquoise it almost looks unreal. Getting there is part of the fun too: you ride the Gelmerbahn funicular, which used to be the steepest in Europe. It feels a bit like a slow rollercoaster, and my kids thought it was wild.
At the lake: There’s a loop trail that goes all the way around (about 4 km / 2 hours). It’s beautiful but not stroller-friendly—there are some rocky, exposed parts, so it’s better for older kids.
If you’ve got little ones: Don’t worry about hiking the whole thing. Just pack a picnic, sit by the shore, and let them play while you take in that view. Honestly, the lake color alone makes the trip worth it.
When to go: June–October, when the funicular is running and the trail isn’t covered in snow. Even in summer, bring a jacket—it’s chilly at 1,850 m.
Getting there: Start at Handegg, ride the funicular up in about 10 minutes, and you’re right at the lake. Tickets sell out fast, and you must book ahead.
👉 Gelmersee is one of those places that feels like an adventure before you even start hiking—my kids still talk about both the funicular ride and the lake.
