Giessbach Waterfalls

The Giessbach Falls cascade down the mountainside in 14 stages, dropping a total of 400 meters into Lake Brienz. It’s one of the most beautiful waterfall outings in the region, and getting there is half the fun.

  • The journey: Drive, or take a boat ride across Lake Brienz (from Brienz) to the Giessbach stop, then hop on the charming funicular railway up to the historic Grandhotel Giessbach. From the hotel terrace, you get a perfect view of the waterfalls without much effort.

  • What to do: If you’re up for it, hike the trail that climbs alongside the falls. Some sections even lead you behind the roaring water—a huge hit with kids. Afterward, grab lunch on the hotel terrace (reservations recommended) or snacks from the kiosk.

  • Best time to visit: Spring and early summer, when the snowmelt makes the falls thunderously full.

  • Open: Usually April–late October.

👉 This makes a great half-day adventure, especially paired with a Lake Brienz boat cruise.
