St. Beatus-Höhlen (Swiss Caves)
Just above Lake Thun, you’ll find the St. Beatus Caves—a network of tunnels and chambers that kids will swear feels like stepping into a fantasy story. Legend says a dragon once lived here until it was chased out by Saint Beatus, and honestly, wandering through the dripping caves with lantern lights makes the story feel pretty believable.
The vibe: Cool, dark, and a little bit magical. Waterfalls tumble through the entrance, and inside you’ll walk past stalactites, stalagmites, and underground streams.
The walk: The guided tour covers about 1 km of caves and takes 75 minutes. It’s paved, but there are stairs, so bring good shoes and a sweater (it’s a constant 8–10°C / 46–50°F inside).
With kids: Perfect for school-age kids who love adventures—just spooky enough to be exciting without being scary. Little ones under 5 might find the tour long. Outside the caves, there’s a dragon-themed playground and a museum that explains the geology in a kid-friendly way.
