Brienzer Rothorn (Summit)

At 2,351 m, the Brienzer Rothorn is the highest peak in the Emmental Alps, towering over Lake Brienz with sweeping views in every direction. The best part? You don’t need to hike for hours to enjoy it—just ride the vintage steam cogwheel train from Brienz or the cable car from Sörenberg, and you’re at the top with minimal effort.

We planned to do this one but It was pouring rain all day so we decided to skip it!

  • The viewpoint: A short path leads up to an observation deck with 360° views—you can see Lake Brienz below, the Bernese Alps in the distance, and even across to central Switzerland.

  • Food & drinks: There are two restaurants at the summit, both with big outdoor terraces. Perfect for a leisurely lunch or afternoon drinks while the kids marvel at the views.

  • Easy hike option: Walk down to Eisee alpine lake (about 30 minutes), where you can picnic or stop at the lakeside restaurant. Ride the chairlift back up when you’re ready.

  • Adventure hike option: The Brienzer Rothorn ridge trail starts here—about 4 hours one way to Turren/Lungern. It’s spectacular but only for experienced hikers.

  • Best for families: This is one of the easiest “big mountain” viewpoints to reach in Switzerland—ideal for grandparents, little kids, or anyone who wants world-class views without a strenuous climb.

Open: Early June–late October
