What camera equipment do I shoot with?

One of our most asked questions... what camera gear we use?

I just want to start by saying there’s absolutely no pressure to go out and buy an expensive camera before your trip, your iPhone will take incredible photos and capture some really special moments. Photography was something I already loved, so I remember being so excited to upgrade my camera before we left for our lap, knowing I’d be shooting a lot more along the way.

We like to keep our setup pretty balanced but it’s definitely something that’s grown over the years. It now covers everything from high quality shots to those quick captures as well as anything underwater.

For our main photography, we shoot on the Sony a7iii. This is what we use for most of our “hero” images, the ones we really want to look sharp and detailed. It’s super reliable, handles all kinds of light really well (especially those early mornings and sunsets) and just gives us that clean, professional look. We pair it with a Sony 24–70mm GM II, which is such a great lens and perfect for pretty much everything we shoot on the road. Prior to this we had a Tamron lens which we absolutely loved and it was beautiful, lightweight and so much more affordable!

For everyday stuff, I always carry the Fujifilm x100v in my bag. This is my ultimate go to for point and shoot fun, quick snaps around camp and just capturing the moment without having to think too much. It’s small, easy to store and honestly makes shooting feel fun again. It's perfect for travel days and the best part is, I don't really have to edit any of the images as the film simulations are so great!

When it comes to being in or around the water, we use the DJI Osmo Action 4. It’s tough, waterproof and super easy to use, which makes it ideal for snorkelling, diving, and anything a bit more adventurous. We don’t have to worry about it, and it still gets great footage! Such an upgrade from our GoPro.

Now for anything above ground, we use the DJI Air 3. The aerial perspective just shows off the colours, reef, coastline and landscapes in a way you can’t get from the ground. It’s perfect for camps, beaches, and those wide landscape shots. I would highly recommend a drone if your lapping around aus, it gives you a completely different perspective and really helps capture just how incredible the places you visit are.

At the end of the day, this whole setup has just grown with us as we’ve travelled and figured things out along the way. You don’t need the “perfect” gear to get started, just something that helps you capture the moments that matter to you. Hopefully this gives you a bit of insight into what we use and how we shoot on the road. If you’ve got any questions or want to know more, feel free to reach out, we’re always happy to help. :)
