Goshuin stamp books, or goshuinchō, are such a fun and unique way to bring a little piece of Japan home with you! These beautiful books are used to collect stamps from temples and shrines all over the country. Each goshuin is hand-drawn by temple staff and features stunning calligraphy, the name of the temple or shrine, and the date of your visit. Not only do they make for a special keepsake, but they also give you a deeper connection to Japan’s history and traditions. Whether you’re visiting popular spots like Fushimi Inari or stumbling upon a hidden gem, your goshuin stamp book will be a one-of-a-kind memento from your adventure.
*You can buy Goshuin books at most shrines for ¥1,000 - ¥2,000. Each Goshuin drawing is usually around ¥500. Note, you cannot take a photo or video while the goshuin is being drawn.
Another fun and meaningful souvenir from Japan’s temples and shrines are fortunes, or omikuji. These small paper slips reveal your luck in areas like love, health, and travel, ranging from very good to not-so-great! Drawing an omikuji is part of the fun—whether shaking a box or picking a numbered stick to reveal your fortune. They usually cost about ¥100. If it's good, you can keep it as a little reminder of luck; if not, you can tie it at the shrine to leave the bad luck behind. Omikuji are a unique way to experience Japan’s spiritual traditions and make for a thoughtful souvenir!
