Colca Canyon is one of Peru’s most impressive natural landscapes and an absolute must if you’re visiting Arequipa. Often said to be one of the deepest canyons in the world, it’s a place of dramatic valleys, terraced hillsides, tiny villages, and sweeping Andean scenery that honestly feels endless.

Most people visit on a 1–2 day tour from Arequipa, which usually includes stops at viewpoints, traditional towns, and the famous Cruz del Cóndor, where you can watch Andean condors soaring just metres overhead — one of the best wildlife moments in Peru. Longer treks into the canyon are also popular if you’re keen on hiking and don’t mind a challenge.

If you hike down into the canyon, expect steep trails, hot temperatures at the bottom, and big climbs back out — tough but incredibly rewarding. Many routes include an overnight stay in an oasis village with natural pools, which feels amazing after a long day on the trail.

Tours typically cost around USD $30–$60 for day trips, with multi-day hikes ranging higher depending on accommodation and guides. Altitude is no joke here, so it’s best done after a few days of acclimatisation in Arequipa.

If you’re into epic scenery, wildlife, and adventure, Colca Canyon is one of those places that really lives up to the HYPE!
