Overview

Kerið Crater is one of the most visually stunning volcanic features in South Iceland. Famous for its vibrant red slopes and striking blue lake at the bottom, it offers an unforgettable contrast of colors and a quick but rewarding walk in nature.

This crater was formed around three thousand years ago during a volcanic eruption and is now partially filled with water, forming a beautiful lake that reflects the surrounding landscape. It is a favorite stop on the Golden Circle route and a great option for those short on time but eager for scenic views.

What to Expect

Easy Access
Kerið is very easy to visit. The crater is just a short walk from the main parking lot. A second parking area is also available and marked with clear signs. Parking is free, but entry requires a small fee that goes toward preservation.

Walk Around the Crater Rim
It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to walk the full loop around the rim. The trail is mostly flat and well marked, offering excellent photo opportunities from every angle.

Walk Down to the Water
A set of stairs leads from the rim down to the lake. This descent takes about five minutes. At the bottom, you can get closer to the water and see the walls of the crater from below.

Changing Seasons
In summer, the crater is especially colorful with deep red slopes, green moss, and blue water. In winter, the lake often freezes and the view can be less striking if snow covers the crater. If there is heavy snow, the visit may not be worth it for some travelers as the colors and shapes become hidden.

Facilities On Site
There is a food truck on site during peak seasons offering snacks and drinks. Visitors will also find free restrooms, which are well maintained.

Visitor Tips

• Arrive early in the day during peak travel seasons, as the parking lots can get full
• Entry is around 600 ISK per adult, which must be paid at the entrance booth
• Wear sturdy shoes, especially if you plan to walk down the stairs or visit in winter
• Great stop for a short walk and photography during your Golden Circle day trip
• Suitable for all ages, though supervision is advised for young children near the crater edge
