The Armstrong redwood grove feels like stepping into a fairytale world. And the Pioneer Nature Trail is the best way to experience it. The trail winds through massive, old-growth redwoods that make everything else feel small in the best way.
At just 1.6 miles and almost no elevation gain, this is an easy yet incredibly immersive walk. You’re constantly looking up, slowing down, and realizing how long these trees have been standing here.
There’s also a small detail that most people miss. After heavy rain, a seasonal waterfall appears within the forest. It’s not always flowing, but when it is, it adds a new layer to the experience. You can access it via the appropriately named "Waterfall Trail."
Another very important tip: Don’t skip it just because the weather looks rainy or foggy.
Fog and light rain actually make Armstrong better. The forest gets moodier and more atmospheric. Bright sunny days are beautiful, but gloomy conditions are just as magical. But if it's full-blown pouring rain, maybe skip that.
Important Strategy Notes
You can save on parking by parking on the street just outside the park entrance and walking in. I usually park inside the park, but I've seen plenty of people park outside and walk in. Bonus: The free parking is right next to the end of the Pioneer Trail anyway.
Cell service is unreliable, so download your map before arriving.
Go early if you want fewer crowds on the main loop. But generally speaking, it's less crowded than Muir Woods.
After rain, expect muddy sections, but also the chance to see the seasonal waterfall.
Armstrong Redwoods is an incredible example of an old-growth redwood forest, and it's only about 1.5 hours from the Bay Area.
