Pico to Pico / PR1 is the most iconic hike in Madeira!!! It is VERY challenging (stairs galore), and VERY crowded, so please beware of massive queues, and try to visit during off-season if you can, but it is still worth it -- especially after seeing a sunrise over the clouds at Pico do Areiro! PR1 Vereda do Areeiro is a 7 km trail that connects the most iconic peaks on the island: The hike from Pico do Areiro-Ruivo and back takes about 5 hours roundtrip and offers stunning views of the Central Mountain Massif. You will pass through tunnels, steep slopes, and even a staircase carved into the rock (known as the "Stairway to Heaven").
