This isn't just a hike; it's an alpine-to-ocean odyssey that captures the very best of British Columbia’s rugged "front yard." We’re starting at the clouds and ending at the shoreline, hitting everything from a hidden "tombolo" to old-growth forests along the way. If you want to feel the raw scale of the Pacific Northwest in a single day, this is your blueprint.

Morning: Alpine Glow & The Howe Sound Crest

07:00 AM | The Cypress Bowl Sunrise Start your climb up Cypress Bowl Road early. Pull over at the Cypress Bowl Lookout (about 2/3 of the way up) just as the sun breaks. You’ll see the Vancouver skyline waking up below you, draped in morning mist.

08:30 AM | St. Mark’s Summit (The Big One) Park at the Cypress Mountain Downhill Area and find the trailhead for the Howe Sound Crest Trail.

  • The Hike: It’s a rewarding 11km round-trip trek through ancient sub-alpine forest.

  • The Reward: Reaching the summit provides the most iconic view in Southwest BC: a dizzying drop-off overlooking the islands of Howe Sound and the snow-capped Tantalus Range.

  • Pro-Tip: Expect snow or mud near the top even in early spring (March). Bring microspikes if you're traveling before June.

Midday: Trestle Bridges & Village Vibes

12:30 PM | The Trestle Bridge Shortcut On your drive back down the mountain, stop near the Cypress Pop-Up Village to access the Mountain Path. A short, easy walk leads you to the new Trestle Bridge. It’s a "Soft Adventure" masterpiece that feels like a Kettle Valley railway relic, offering a unique industrial-meets-nature photo op.

01:30 PM | Horseshoe Bay Late Lunch Head to the bustling village of Horseshoe Bay. Grab a table at Olive & Anchor for fresh local seafood or join the locals for legendary fish and chips at Troll’s. Watch the massive BC Ferries glide in and out of the harbor while you refuel.

Afternoon: Secret Islands & Whale Watching

03:00 PM | Whytecliff Park & The Tombolo

A five-minute drive from the bay brings you to Whytecliff Park Click to open side panel for more information .

  • The Secret: This is a Marine Protected Area with a famous Tombolo—a rocky island connected to the mainland only at low tide.

  • The Timing: Check the tide charts; if the tide is out, you can scramble across to the island for a 360-degree view of the sound.

04:30 PM | Lighthouse Park Golden Hour If you still have the energy, wrap up at Lighthouse Park. We’ve spent many evenings on the granite bluffs here. It’s one of the best land-based spots for spotting harbor seals and the occasional pod of Orcas. The 1912 lighthouse against a sunset sky is the ultimate West Coast finish.

Evening: The Rural Refined Finish

Head back toward the city and pull into the Ambleside or Park Royal neighborhoods.

  • The Spot: For a high-end coastal vibe, try Ancora Waterfront Dining or the heated patio at Earls Ambleside to watch the waves.

  • The Vibe: Relax, order a BC craft brew, and toast to a day that covered 1,400 meters of vertical descent.

Parking Trap - Whytecliff and Lighthouse Park fill up fast. Mid-week is best, otherwise, expect to wait for a spot.
