Step-by-Step: How to Pack for Japan

1. Prioritize comfort (you’ll walk a LOT)
Japan trips = 15k–25k steps per day

Pack:

  • 1–2 pairs of comfortable walking shoes

  • Breathable, lightweight clothing

  • Layers (weather can shift quickly)

👉 This matters more than fashion—seriously.

2. Pack light (Japan is easy for laundry + shopping)
You don’t need as much as you think.

Ideal strategy:

  • 4–5 outfits max

  • Plan to do laundry mid-trip

  • We usually bring a carry on and pack a foldable duffel bag for shopping that we check on the return flight.

3. Bring a small day bag
You’ll use this constantly.

Pack:

  • Compact backpack or crossbody

  • Space for water, snacks, trash, souvenirs

4. Carry a portable trash bag (underrated essential)
Public trash cans are rare.

Pack:

  • Small foldable bag or ziplocks

5. Bring a coin purse (you’ll actually use coins a lot)
Japan still uses cash heavily in small amounts.

Pack:

  • Small wallet or coin pouch

6. Portable charger = must-have
You’ll rely heavily on your phone (maps, trains, translation).

Pack:

  • Power bank

  • Charging cable

7. Pack a lightweight umbrella or rain jacket
Weather can change unexpectedly.

Alternative:

  • Buy a cheap umbrella at a convenience store (very easy)

8. Bring slip-on shoes (optional but helpful)
You’ll take shoes off often (restaurants, temples, ryokan).

👉 Makes life easier vs tying shoes constantly.

9. Toiletries + medication (keep it simple)
Japan has great stores, but certain medications can be hard to find:

Bring:

  • Any specific medications you need. We usually bring Tylenol, Ibuprofen, allergy medication, cold/flu medication as some of these can be harder to find.

  • Travel-size basics

10. Luggage strategy matters more than size
Japan travel = lots of movement.

Best setup:

  • Medium suitcase + backpack

  • OR carry-on only (ideal if you can)

👉 Consider luggage forwarding (TA-Q-BIN) if moving frequently.

11. Tech essentials

  • Phone (obviously)

  • Charger + adapter (Japan uses Type A plugs—same as US, but you'll need an adaptor for 3 prong items)

  • Headphones

12. Optional but helpful extras

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Sunglasses/hat (summer)

  • Face mask (still common in some situations)
