The Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings on Lake Taupō are one of the North Island’s biggest attractions. This incredible artwork stands 14-metres tall, and is made up of several carvings that depict famous ancestors and guardians of the local Maori tribe. The carvings were created by master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell and his team of four other artists, over a period of 4 years beginning in 1976. It can only be accessed by boat, so visitors can enjoy scenic tour of the surroundings before making their way to see the carvings. This spectacular attraction provides visitors with an unforgettable experience of the amazing natural and cultural heritage in the area.
