Ribeira da Janela (Northwest Coast)

Coastal rock formations and wild Atlantic energy

Ribeira da Janela is known for its dramatic sea stacks – giant volcanic spires rising straight out of the ocean. The viewpoint is right by the coast and easy to reach, but it feels wild and untamed, especially when waves crash against the rocks.

I usually stop here en route to Porto Moniz or Seixal – five minutes is all you need for that “wow” photo.

Insider tip

  • Best light is sunrise or late afternoon for softer colors.

  • Combine with Fanal Forest for an epic northwest circuit.

  • There’s a hidden path down to the pebbled beach if you want a closer look.

For those who want more context
The name means “Window River,” referring to the hole in one of the sea stacks that looks like a window. It’s a favorite stop on the old coastal road connecting Seixal and Porto Moniz.
