In addition to being a geological marvel, this Crater played a crucial role in the early study of impact craters. Researchers like Daniel Barringer, who purchased the land in the early 1900s, were instrumental in proving it was caused by a meteorite — not volcanic activity, as many originally believed. Today, it remains privately owned and operated but is open to the public through the Meteor Crater Visitor Center.

Meteor Crater, also known as Barringer Crater, is one of the best-preserved meteorite impact sites on Earth. Located just outside of Winslow, Arizona, this massive crater was formed approximately 50,000 years ago when a 150-foot-wide iron-nickel meteorite slammed into the Colorado Plateau at an estimated speed of 26,000 miles per hour. The impact released energy equivalent to about 10 megatons of TNT, instantly creating the bowl-shaped depression we see today.
