A scenic, off-the-beaten-path route just outside of Moab that winds through stunning red rock desert and leads to one of the area’s most iconic natural formations—the twin sandstone arches known as Gemini Bridges. This popular 4x4 route is a favorite for off-roaders, mountain bikers, hikers, and photographers, offering a mix of desert beauty, geological wonders, and wide-open canyon views.

What to See & Do

  • Gemini Bridges (The Arches)
At the end of the main road (or partway if you're hiking or biking), you’ll reach the Gemini Bridges, two natural rock spans towering over a dramatic canyon. These bridges were formed by water erosion and stand side-by-side above a vertical drop—no railing, so use caution near the edge.
From the top, you can walk across the bridges (carefully!) and peer down into the canyon below—perfect for photos, especially at sunrise or sunset when the red rock glows.

  • Scenic Views Along the Drive
The route itself is an experience: it climbs from the base of Highway 191 up into high desert terrain, with panoramic views of Moab Valley, the La Sal Mountains, and towering red rock cliffs. Wildflowers bloom in spring, and the colors shift dramatically with the sun throughout the day.

  • Side Trips & Nearby Points of Interest
If you're up for a longer adventure, Gemini Bridges Road also connects to other iconic trails like Metal Masher, Bull Canyon, and Gold Bar Rim, or you can loop toward Dead Horse Point State Park and Canyonlands National Park.

Access & Trail Info

  • Distance: About 14 miles (one way) from Highway 191 to the Gemini Bridges Trailhead and back.

  • Road Type: Graded dirt with occasional rocky and sandy sections. Suitable for high-clearance 2WD vehicles in dry conditions, but 4x4 is recommended, especially after rain.

  • Time Needed: Expect 1.5–3 hours round-trip depending on road conditions and stops.

  • Coordinates for Gemini Bridges Viewpoint:
    38.6092°N, 109.6535°W

  • Trailhead Options:

    • Start from Highway 191 about 10 miles north of Moab (look for the BLM sign).

    • Alternate access via Arches National Park side or from the top via UT-313, both options offering slightly different terrain.

Camping

While there are no developed campgrounds directly on Gemini Bridges Road, BLM dispersed camping is allowed throughout the area, especially along Cottonwood Canyon Road, Mill Canyon, and side spurs off the trail. These sites are first-come, first-served and free, but have no amenities.

  • Pack out all trash and waste

  • Use existing campsites and fire rings

  • Follow Leave No Trace principles

  • No facilities – bring your own water, toilet setup, and supplies

Pet Friendliness

Dogs are welcome on Gemini Bridges Road and at the bridges themselves. The area is fully exposed, so in warmer months make sure to pack water for your dog, avoid hiking mid-day, and protect paws from hot sand or slickrock.

Off-leash is allowed in most BLM areas if your dog is under voice control, but be mindful of cliffs, cactus, and bikes/ATVs sharing the trail.

Best Time to Visit

  • Spring (March–May) and Fall (September–November) are ideal with mild temperatures and clear skies.

  • Sunrise & Sunset offer the best lighting for photography.

  • Avoid during/after rainstorms, as the road becomes slick and muddy and some sections may be impassable.

Pro Tips:

  • Bring a map or GPS device—there are many intersecting trails and it's easy to get turned around.

  • The Bull Canyon overlook lets you see the Gemini Bridges from below—a totally different (and equally dramatic) perspective.

  • Be respectful of the fragile desert environment—stay on marked roads and trails, and don’t drive on the slickrock unless it’s designated for vehicle travel.
