Scotland, United Kingdom

The Bealach na Bà is one of the most iconic roads in Scotland—but it’s not for the faint-hearted.

This mountain pass has steep gradients, tight hairpin bends, sheer drop-offs and is a single-track road with limited passing places. It’s beautiful, yes, but you need to drive with caution.

What to Expect:

  • A narrow, winding road with no barrier in some sections

  • Very steep inclines and declines

  • Sharp hairpin bends, some require a full lock turn

  • Roughly 11.1 miles (17.86 km) long, connecting Tornapress to Applecross

  • Breathtaking views, but with some steep drop offs.

Important Warnings:

  • Not suitable for caravans or large motorhomes. We would advice AGAINST driving this road in a motorhome or if towing a caravan. The road is too narrow and sharp for larger vehicles to turn or reverse safely.

  • It's not ideal if you’re afraid of heights. Parts of the road hug the cliff edge with steep drop-offs and no guardrails.

  • Avoid in bad weather or low visibility. Do not attempt to drive it in snow, ice, heavy rain, strong winds or thick fog. It's best driven on a clear, dry day.

  • Expect delays in peak season. Summer and school holidays bring lots of traffic and there can be queues at passing points.

Campervans/ Motorhomes/ Towing a campervan

  • We drove it in a campervan (a Swift Trekker X) and found it manageable—but only because we’re confident reversing and knew what to expect. We would not advise trying it in anything bigger.

  • Always research your specific vehicle size and turning radius before attempting the pass.

Alternative Route for Larger Vehicles

Motorhomes and large vehicles should take the coastal road from Shieldaig to Applecross instead. It’s longer, but much safer for bigger setups.
Note: This route will add time to your journey, so plan accordingly.

Final Tips:

  • Watch videos or read trip reports ahead of time to see what it’s really like.

  • Be confident in your reversing skills - you may need to reverse uphill to the nearest passing place.

  • Take it slow, stay alert and give way to uphill traffic.
