Port Renfrew is home to some of Canada’s largest trees and is an incredible destination for photographers looking to capture ancient forests and rugged landscapes. One of the must-visit spots in the area is Eden Grove, a stunning stand of old-growth trees that remains unprotected from logging despite ongoing conservation efforts. Thanks to volunteers, a well-maintained trail winds through the grove, making it a great place to experience and photograph these towering giants.

Forest photography can be challenging even in good light, but Eden Grove’s massive trees make it a little easier. Rather than trying to capture entire trees, I recommend focusing on the details—textures, patterns, and how the light plays through the canopy.

Getting to Eden Grove has become more complex over time. The road is steep and has large potholes, and while a 4x4 will have no trouble, I wouldn’t recommend it for low-clearance or two-wheel-drive vehicles. Most people park at the Edinburgh Main Bridge over the Gordon River and hike the 1.5 km to the grove. The gorge at the bridge, with its deep canyon walls and rushing water, is worth a few shots.

On the way to Eden Grove, you’ll pass Lonely Doug, Canada’s second-tallest tree. Standing alone in a clearcut is a powerful and sobering reminder of why old-growth forests need protection—for their beauty and for future generations to experience.
