5 Best Ways to Get Around in Korea
Taxis / Uber (my least favorite)
I'll be honest, I hardly ever use Taxis or Ubers in Korea, mainly because you can get stuck in Seoul traffic for hours. They're typically the most expensive option, and unless you want privacy, there's really no point to them if you're within subway limits. However, if it's late at night or you're too far from the subway, then they might be your only option. I don't recommend just grabbing one off the street, and if you do make sure to set the price to your destination before getting in, but downloading the KakaoT App and ordering one through the app. You can also download Uber (locally called UT) which is newer in Korea, but works the same way. Typically, taxi drivers won't speak much English, so it can be hard if you don't have a translating app.
Public Bus System (it's ok)
The bus system in Seoul and across Korea is the most extensive bus system I've ever seen. Seoul city buses are typically the largest and most packed, but they also have the most frequent runs. "Village buses" are smaller and usually only run in neighborhoods or smaller towns, if you're wanting to get to and from Seoul you'll most likely need to catch a transfer on one of these unless you're already in the city. Personally, I think the bus system is a bit harder to understand than the subway system only because there's so many options. I recommend downloading NAVER Maps which can help you figure out which bus to take, where to board, and it'll even remind you when your stop to get off is getting closer. Buses will sometimes have their own lanes too, which means you typically will get through traffic quicker than a taxi or private car. The main challenge is that announcements and signs aren’t always in English, so it helps to watch your route closely on your phone.
Walking (best way to find hidden gems)
I consider walking to be the best way to truly explore Seoul. You'll find all kinds of hidden gems and places you never knew existed, and generally speaking, Seoul is much safer than other large cities around the world. If you don't want to get lost, then NAVER Maps is essential. However, smaller neighborhoods in Seoul can often be hilly and further apart than they look on a map, so you'll want some comfortable walking shoes.
Subway System (my favorite)
The subway system in Korea is the backbone of transportation, and personally I think it's the easiest ways to get around the city. I use NAVER Maps for pretty much every trip, and it'll plan routes, tell me my transfer stations, and even estimate travel and departure times. The subways in Korea are clean, affordable, and punctual. I do recommend avoiding them during rush hour, when they can become extremely crowded, otherwise I think it's the most effective way to get around Seoul.
Train System / KTX (my second favorite)
I use Korea’s trains whenever I’m traveling between cities, like from Seoul to Daegu or Busan. The bullet trains are pretty fast, clean, and comfortable, and prices vary depending on the time you want and if you're wanting a direct connection. Regional trains are a little slower but still reliable, and they’re a great option if you want to see the countryside of Korea. They usually have free Wifi so I recommend bringing some snacks and enjoying the views along the way! Unlike other modes of transportation in Korea, you'll need to book your tickets ahead of time on the Korail website.
How to Pay for Public Transportation in Korea
If you're planning to use Public Buses or the Subway System in Seoul, the best way to pay is through your T-Money Card or Bee Card. You can purchase these at convenience stores like CU or GS25, and they're reloadable through machines at each subway stop. You can tap on and tap off each time so you're charged the correct amount. Currently, Seoul is in the process of revamping this system so visitors can simply use their credit card, but not all stations have been updated yet.
If you're planning to use Taxis or Ubers, you'll be charged the amount through your app, or you can choose to pay cash.
