Swimming under a waterfall sounds like a dream activity in the tropics, and Aberdeen Falls makes this dream a reality. Located in the district of Nuwara Eliya, this breathtaking natural wonder is nestled amidst lush greenery. With a height of approximately 98 meters (322 feet), it cascades down in a spectacular display of power and beauty, captivating visitors with its mesmerizing sight. However, reaching the waterfall requires a small hike.

The trail to Aberdeen Waterfall begins at the Aberdeen Car Park, where you'll find a partly steep but well-maintained path leading to the base of the falls. It's about 600-800 steps and 1-2 kilometers from the parking lot to the waterfall, but don't worry; the descent is not too challenging. Take your time, enjoy the views, and perhaps indulge in a swim if you desire. Allow yourself about 20-30 minutes to hike back up.

• THE BEST TIME TO VISIT is during or shortly after the rainy season when the waterfall is at its most impressive. However, be mindful that the path may be slippery, and there may be small leeches around.

• DO make sure to bring a change of clothes for swimming, along with something like a sarong or a large towel for changing. It's necessary to hide behind some rocks to change, as it's not culturally appropriate to do so openly in Sri Lankan culture. Remember to take all your trash back with you, and perhaps even pick up any additional litter you encounter.

• DON'T hike back up in your bikini, as this could be considered disrespectful to the villagers living in the area and the locals visiting.

• RIDE2XPLORE TIP: get yourself a tea or a roti in the cute little shop right on top of the stairs. Sometimes you can buy drinks down at the waterfalls. But the shop is not always open. So make sure to bring your own water bottle.
