Zoo Basel, locally known as Zolli, is Switzerland’s oldest zoo, established on July 3, 1874. Located in the city of Basel near the Birsig River, this family-friendly zoo spans 11 hectares and is home to over 7,000 animals from 628 species, making it one of the most diverse zoos in Europe.

Zoo Basel is internationally renowned for its pioneering breeding programs. It was the first zoo in Europe to successfully breed Indian rhinoceroses and gorillas. The zoo also coordinates the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) for Indian rhinoceroses and contributes to global conservation efforts, such as supporting the Indian Rhino Vision 2020 and projects for okapis and Somali wild donkeys.

Notable Exhibits:

Vivarium: One of the first in Europe, showcasing a wide array of fish, reptiles, and amphibians.

Gamgoas Lion Enclosure: A modern habitat designed for lions.

Antelope House: Built in 1910, it now houses giraffes and okapis.

Flamingo Exhibit: Known for its successful breeding program, hatching over 400 flamingos since 2000.

Seraina’s Tip: If you visit during winter, try to catch the delightful Penguin Walk, where king and gentoo penguins waddle through the zoo daily when temperatures drop below 10°C. Watching these clumsy, puffy animals waddle through the zoo is beyond cute.
