Chan Chan, once the capital city of the Chimor kingdom, is now a fascinating archaeological site in Huanchaco. In its prime, it was the largest city in pre-Columbian South America before it fell to the Incas. It was then later looted by the Spaniards. UNESCO has recognized Chan Chan as a World Heritage Site, but it still faces challenges like erosion and plundering.

I would recommend coughing up the extra dough to get a guide. I personally didnt and the whole time I was confused what I was actually looking at. I think the magic behind places like this is hearing the history and lore.

There is a free museum included with the ticket price which did help provide some context.
