Getting Around Fukuoka: Subways, Trains & Walking

Fukuoka is incredibly easy to navigate without a car. The city's subway system, local trains, and buses connect most major attractions, while many neighborhoods are surprisingly walkable.

The Fukuoka City Subway is the fastest way to get around and connects directly to Fukuoka Airport, making arrivals and departures especially convenient.

Approximate travel times from Hakata Station:

• 🍜 Canal City Hakata: 10–15 minutes on foot

• 🏮 Nakasu: 5 minutes by subway or 15–20 minutes on foot

• 🛍️ Tenjin: 5 minutes by subway

• 🌳 Ōhori Park: 10 minutes by subway

• ⚾ Mizuho PayPay Dome: 15–20 minutes by subway + short walk

• ✈️ Fukuoka Airport: 5 minutes by subway

• ⛩️ Dazaifu Tenmangū Shrine: 40–50 minutes by train

Things to know:

• IC cards like Suica, PASMO, ICOCA, and SUGOCA work on subways, trains, and buses.

• The subway has three lines: Airport Line, Hakozaki Line, and Nanakuma Line.

• Google Maps works exceptionally well for navigating Fukuoka.

• Taxis are more affordable than in many other Japanese cities, especially when traveling in a group.

• You do not need a rental car if you're staying in Fukuoka City.

My tip: Stay near Hakata Station for easy access to the airport and day trips, or stay in Tenjin for the best shopping, nightlife, and food scene.

Fun fact: Fukuoka Airport is one of the closest major airports to a city center in Japan—you can go from your flight to downtown Hakata in about 10 minutes.
