Iceland
If you are heading to Iceland, chances are soaking in a steamy hot spring is right on your bucket list- and for good reason. But not all hot springs are created equal. Before you slip into your swimsuit and head for the water, it's important to know where that water is coming from and what kind of experience you're signing up for.
In Iceland, you'll find three main types of geothermal bathing options:
Natural Hot Springs: rugged, often remote, and full of adventure
Local Geothermal Pools: where Icelanders gather for everyday swims and soaks.
Spa-Style Lagoons: designed for relaxation, luxury, and incredible views
Whether you're craving a peaceful retreat, a bucket list moment, or a hidden gem-we've done the legwork (and the soaking!) to help you decide. Here are some of our absolute favorite Geothermal spots in Iceland:
Hvammsvík Hot Springs- West Iceland
This place blew us away. Hvammsvík is nestled right on the edge of the ocean, blending natural beauty with luxury. Depending on the tide, some of the pools even mix with seawater. You'll find multiple pools of varying temperatures, and on-site steam room, a cozy cafe, and beautiful changing facilities with private showers.
Good to know:
Swim-up bar
Gorgeous views
Adults-only in the evenings (perfect for couples)
Advanced booking recommended Book Hvammsvik Here!
Vök Baths- East Iceland
Imagine soaking in a floating geothermal pool on a glassy lake surrounded by mountains. That’s Vök. We went first thing in the morning, and it felt like heaven. It’s elegant, tranquil, and beautifully designed.
Why we love it:
Unique floating pools on Lake Urriðavatn
Swim-up bar
Indoor changing facilities and café
Optional spa packages for extra pampering
Best for: Morning relaxation and serene lake views. Book Vok Here!
Sky Lagoon- Just outside Reykjavík
If you’re arriving early or leaving late, Sky Lagoon is the perfect place to book your first or last soak. It’s modern and luxurious, yet still rooted in Icelandic tradition. The 7-step ritual includes a cold plunge, steam room, body scrub, and sauna with panoramic views over the ocean.
Why we love it:
Oceanfront infinity-style lagoon
Private shower and changing room options
7-step ritual makes it more than “just a soak”
Swim-up bar
Best for: First or last stop in Iceland—especially if you want to treat yourself. Book Sky Lagoon Here!
Hrunalaug-Near Flúðir, Southwest Iceland
This little hidden gem feels like stepping into a fairytale. It’s tucked away on private land and surrounded by mossy hills. The water is warm, the setting is intimate, and the vibe is peaceful. Just note—it’s small, and it can fill up quickly.
Why we love it:
Wild and rustic with a rich Icelandic charm
Fee goes to the landowner (can be cashless)
Small stone changing hut
Perfect for golden hour soaking
Best for: Off-the-beaten-path adventurers looking for a quiet, natural soak.
Quick Tips Before You Soak
Shower before entering – It’s required and respectful of local traditions
Bring your own towel and swimsuit – Rentals are available but can be pricey
Book in advance – Especially for spa-style lagoons
Check road access in winter – Some spots may require 4WD
Cell service can be spotty – Download directions or maps in advance
Hot springs in Iceland aren’t just a bucket-list activity—they’re a way to truly feel the landscape. Whether you're soaking under the stars, warming up after a glacier hike, or just letting the Icelandic wind whip across your face while you sip a drink in a steamy pool, there's no experience quite like it.
Each spring on this list offers something unique, and we hope this helps you find the one (or three!) that fits your adventure best.
See you in the steam,
– Brittany
