Sommarøy is one of those places that feels almost unreal — an Arctic island where the beaches look more like the Caribbean than northern Norway. With soft white sand, turquoise waters, and sweeping views of surrounding islands and fjords, it’s a spot that surprises nearly every visitor.

Located about an hour’s drive from Tromsø, Sommarøy is a popular day trip yet still feels wonderfully peaceful once you’re there. The village itself is small and charming, with brightly painted houses, fishing boats, and bridges connecting tiny islets scattered in the sea.

In summer, the Midnight Sun casts golden light across the beaches, while in winter, you might even see the Northern Lights dancing over the island — making it a year-round destination. The beaches are perfect for a walk or a picnic, though the water is ice-cold, so swimming is best left to the very brave.

Parking: Free parking is available near the main beach area and by the bridge into Sommarøy. Everything on the island is within short walking distance once you’re parked.

Insider tip: Come early or late in the day to enjoy the beaches without crowds. If you have time, cross the bridge to the nearby island of Hillesøya for equally stunning views and an even quieter atmosphere.
