I discovered ti waterfall by taking a short detour after passing Sohrarim, From Mawmihthied village, heading toward Mawkma. After about a 14 to 15 minute drive, I arrived at the entrance to Mawsawdong Falls the first stop in the waterfall circuit of Sohra.

How to Get There

The drive from Shillong takes you along the usual Shillong to Sohra highway. Once you pass Sohrarim, you’ll see a turn toward Mawmihthied. Take that and follow the road to Mawkma village. It’s a 2 hour scenic ride from Shillong and easy to find with help from locals or Google Maps. The road conditions are decent, and the last stretch is quiet, with just a few homes and the sound of distant water.

From the parking spot, a concrete footpath leads you straight to the viewpoint. It’s an easy walk and perfect if you’re not looking for a full on trek but still want to see something beautiful.

What to Expect

When I first reached the top viewpoint, I was expecting a single waterfall, but what I saw was way better. Mawsawdong isn’t just one fall, but a series of five waterfalls, each cascading down into a turquoise pool. The water flows gently over layered rocks, creating this almost terraced effect that’s both calm and dramatic at the same time.

To get closer, I climbed over a few large rocks and jumped across some narrow gaps in the ravine. Nothing too technical, but enough to make it fun. From there, the view opened up completely, and it was the perfect spot for photos, I managed to get some drone shots that really showed off how beautifully the falls are tucked into the landscape.

For the Adventurous

If you like light scrambling and don’t mind getting your shoes dusty, you’ll enjoy exploring the area around the falls. There’s space to sit and relax. It’s not crowded, especially in the early hours, and you can easily spend an hour or two just soaking in the quiet and the view.

Good to Know

  • It’s best to visit during the dry months from November to April when the water is clear and paths are easier to walk

  • Wear shoes with grip, the rocks can get slippery, especially if it’s rained

  • Bring water and snacks, there aren’t many shops nearby

  • Great spot for drone photography if you’re into that

  • Add this to your Sohra day trip itinerary, it’s easy to fit in and totally worth the short detour

Mawsawdong is one of those places that sneaks up on you. Definitely one of those stops that deserves a little time and a spot on your Meghalaya list.
