Details you need to know for a Garmisch ski trip.
There are two main areas in Garmisch-Partenkirchen for skiing:
-Garmisch Classic
-Upper Zugspitze
Each of these has different ticket options. Make sure you look at them closely so you can decide which one would be best for your visit. The Garmisch Classic ticket will get you on the ski runs above Hausberg, Kreuzeck, and Alpspitze.
The Zugspitze ticket is only for that area, and does not include the Classic. This area has a smaller number of ski runs, but if you want to ski the top of Germany, this is where you go!
The Garmisch Classic is the better overall ski area. It has a fun slope for kids, magic carpet, and advanced trails.
In Austria, about 30 minutes drive from Garmisch, there are more ski areas: Ehrwald, Lermoos, & Biberwier.
These can be covered by a Top Snow card or by purchasing a Tiroler Ski Pass.
This valley should not be overlooked! It is a quick drive from Garmisch and there are many great skiing options here, as well as cross-country skiing and spa hotels.
Ehrwald
My family likes this spot the best. It has a big variety of runs, a fun slope for kids, some jumps, and nice restaurants. There is a ski school here as well as a kindergarten where you can drop your kids off (for a charge) while you ski.
At the base of the lift you’ll find Brent Alm which has the most lively aprés ski scene in the area.
Lermoos
More challenging runs, tends to be a little more icy than Ehrwald. On a clear day the view is unbeatable. Best on a sunny day after fresh snowfall.
Biberwier
Great for beginners. There is a magic carpet here with a gentle bunny hill. Lessons available here as well. There’s no enclosed gondola here, only chairlifts.
Ski Lessons & Ski Rentals
Ski & Snowboard Lessons are easy to book in Garmisch. There are 3 main places to get your rentals and book your lessons. Most of the time there is at least one person in the shop who can speak English and sometimes you can even secure your rentals online before you get there. There are a couple other spots to rent from “ski verleih” means ski rental.
English lessons are also possible. You’ll have to decide between doing a private lesson or a group lesson. Of course, you will get more individualized help in a private lesson, but it is more expensive.
Make sure to reserve well in advance if you will be visiting the 2 weeks after Christmas or the week of Fasching (Fat Tuesday) as those are the busiest ski weeks.
